Let’s talk about advanced hormonal labs. When I say advanced, I’m referring to labs that fall outside the western ‘standard of care’ and are typically not covered by insurance. Now, don’t get me wrong—western medicine has its merits. It’s all about population-based evidence, diagnosing diseases, and prescribing medications to manage those conditions. But when it comes to our individual hormonal health, especially during perimenopause and menopause, we might need to think outside that box.


This is where personalized medicine shines. Instead of relying solely on broad guidelines that apply to the masses, personalized medicine focuses on you—the unique individual—and how your specific body operates. It’s about tailoring therapies that sync with your metabolic system.


Let’s break down the advanced testing options available:


1. Saliva / Tissue Activity: While bloodwork is typically covered by insurance and offers a snapshot of what’s circulating in your bloodstream, it doesn’t give the full picture of what’s happening in your tissues where hormones become active. Saliva tests can measure levels of cortisol, DHEA-S, estradiol, estriol, estrone, progesterone, and testosterone ranging from $70 to $260 or more.


2. Urine / Metabolism: Urine testing is another valuable tool for assessing hormone levels and their metabolites. This type of test reveals how effectively your body breaks down hormones—because sometimes symptoms arise not from having too much or too little hormone but from improper metabolism and excretion processes! Depending on what you’re checking for here, expect costs between $70 to $320 or more.


3. Genetic / Methylation: Lastly, genetic testing can uncover changes in your DNA affecting methylation processes essential for metabolizing hormones, toxins, and neurotransmitters effectively. This test can range from about $70 to over $267 depending on what specifics are being analyzed.


When it comes to navigating the rollercoaster of perimenopause or menopause, many women find themselves yearning for clarity. Remember that not everyone needs to dive into extensive testing. Some women may find that simply tracking their symptoms, making lifestyle adjustments, obtaining bloodwork, and/or starting hormone therapy is enough to manage their experience.
